Oh I have been waiting for this, another installment in the Otherworld’s universe from Justin Zimmerman, and I am so not disappointed. This is a pre-preview, we got some pretty sweet early access to this, so if you don’t want spoilers, just stop here, show us all some love and then quietly move on doing something you might have wanted to do instead.
And you thought the Zombie Genre was tired and overdone, no, not at all.
Ok, so we all have our Zombie preparedness sets, we even checked out the CDC notes on what to do in a Zombie invasion, but usually anything zombie just ends up with people boarded up in houses waiting for someone to eat them and kill them. We really never get to explore the psychological issues that go along with a Zombie Invasion.
Justin is no stranger to looking at issues at an oblique angle, which is what makes Safe one of the most satisfying zombie books in a long while.
We get a ton of psychology. Good tension building relentless justifications for actions that would otherwise be an anathema in normal society type of psychology. The comic book is relentless.
We also get some downright awesome zombie killing to go along with that.
The thing that makes this stand out as a zombie comic is that we get a lot of people’s perspectives on the same event, we hear from every character in the book at times except for the zombies, or those who are rapidly turning into zombies. We also get some interesting counter parts to this as the non-zombie family is trying to also justify the mayhem they are causing to the zombies, they want to justify what in effect ends up being a wholesale slaughter.
That is what is making this more interesting than the average run of the mill zombie anything. We learn a lot about people, how they think, and how they try to cope with something becoming increasingly difficult to manage. The tension builds from page to page as the characters try to cope, justify, and not despair in the world gone insane. Trying to hold onto your sanity becomes a deliberate choice throughout this book, as well as holding on to the last vestiges of your humanity.
Overall this one is a total winner, 5 of 5 stars. I would not expect any less out of the Otherworld’s franchise and Justin simply does not disappoint. The comic book is not officially available as of yet, but we will update with purchasing information as soon as we have it. This is going to be one more important comic book for you to read, it is a deliberate well thought out story that looks at the human side of coping with your world falling apart around you.
